10 Sustainable New Year Resolutions; Many of us use the moment of New Year to make a resolution. We reflect on what we have accomplished in the past year, and we plan on what we would like to change in the future. A New Year moment is a good chance to set a goal which evolve ourselves for a better life.

This moment is also a good opportunity to reset our habits that support a sustainable life. If you are someone who puts a more sustainable lifestyle as one of your New Year’s resolutions, there are lots of things you can do. From making a small daily routine to a bigger green movement. Here are ten recommendations for a more sustainable lifestyle you can put in your resolution lists.

1. Refill and reduce single-plastic use

Using a single plastic is wasteful and hurts the planet in many ways.  Thankfully, there are many alternatives to replace single-use plastic items. We can start to change the habit of using single-used plastic by refilling and using reusable containers for shampoo, conditioner, multi-purpose cleaner, and more.

2. Buy slow fashion or second—hand clothing and exchange clothes

The fashion industry emits a huge greenhouse gas. To reduce emissions, we can change our habits by choosing the clothes we wear. We can choose second-hand clothes or join a clothing swap community to exchange clothes with somebody else’s clothes instead of buying new clothes. If we want to buy new clothes, make sure they are slow fashion (high-quality clothes, made from degradable fabric like cotton and silk, also can be worn for a long time).

3. Reduce food waste

Food waste is a widespread issue globally. According to FAO, 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted per year and strongly contributes to climate change. But we can do many things to reduce food waste and its impact on the environment. We can start by planning our meals. Making a shopping list and buying only the ingredients we need per week is better than buying a lot of ingredients at the same time. We can also freeze food or leftovers to reduce waste.

4. Start composting

Composting is a great solution to reduce the carbon footprint impact of household waste. It is easier than it looks. We can start composting our food scraps and other biodegradable items around our house. Composting will create organic fertilizers that can enrich plants around us or in our garden.

We can set up a composter in the outdoor space like in the backyard or even in our kitchen. We can choose a fully sealed composter that will not release any bad smells from the waste.

5. Turn off lights and other electronics when not in use

Turning off lights and unplugging smartphone chargers, microwaves, game consoles, and other unused electricity takes only a few seconds. It will not only save energy but also save money to pay our electricity bills.

6. Bring reusable bags and produce sacks for shopping

Plastic bags are commonly used in grocery stores. But these past few years, most supermarkets have introduced plastic bags free as part of preventing plastic waste movement. Always bring our own reusable shopping bags and produce sacks when going to grocery stores. There are many variations of reusable bags nowadays. From foldable bags to shopping bags made from recycled material like burlap, and more. Whatever they are, these reusable bags are helping to reduce plastic pollution.

7. Less driving a car, more walking and cycling

Another great way to be more sustainable is to drive car less to lower carbon emissions. Swapping from driving a car to walking or cycling even just one day a week makes a significant impact on personal carbon emissions.  Fossil fuel transportation is one of the causes of greenhouse gases. Choosing to walk or ride a bicycle instead of driving a car or motorcycle has significant advantages for the environment.

8. Bring water bottle wherever you go

It is important to eliminate plastic bottles so the plastic water bottles which end up in landfills will be reduced. By switching from buying mineral water in single-use plastic bottles to using a reusable water bottle, we can save a lot of money and contribute to reduce plastic waste globally.

9. Use eco-friendly products

There are lots of eco-friendly products offered nowadays. From kitchenware, bath products, cutleries, shopping bags, and more. Usually, they are made from organic materials that are safe for environments like bamboo and coconut fiber, loofah, or recycled materials.  Using eco-friendly products that do not harm the environment is a great option to live more sustainably.

10. Plant a tree

Trees have an incredible benefit for the environment. They provide oxygen and clean water, prevent disasters like flooding, and landslides, and as a habitat for wildlife.  By planting trees, we are contributing to preserve the environment and combat global warming.

You can gift a tree as a gift to your loved ones at this New Year moment. The tree you gift to your loved ones will contribute to improve the environment and help the local community where it is planted.

A Watershed Moment: Planting Begins at the Citarum River

In 2018, the Citarum became famous for all the wrong reasons, when an environmental survey and medias reported it as the ‘World’s Dirtiest River’. In response, the Indonesian government decided it was high time to implement a comprehensive renewal program for the region. Now, with the help of Trees4Trees, the Citarum is ready to be reborn.

Working closely with the Government of Indonesia and One Tree Planted, and with funding from AstraZeneca, Trees4Trees has started an ambitious reforestation program in the Citarum watershed. A key part of our 2022 planting season, the project will plant a minimum of 10 million trees by 2025.

But how can trees help clean the world’s dirtiest river? What is being done to tackle the problem? And what is the bigger picture for environmental recovery in the region?  Trees4Trees has the answers.

Five Facts: A Closer Look at the World’s Most Infamous River

  1. The Citarum is the longest river in West Java, stretching 185 miles (297 km)
  2. It runs from Bandung, via Jakarta, to the Java Sea
  3. It provides electricity to most of Java and Bali
  4. Pollution comes from household, livestock, industry, agriculture, and fisheries waste
  5. The river contains dangerously high levels of lead, aluminum, manganese and iron

What are the Impacts of all this Pollution?

Disease flooding and citarum river
On People and On Nature

Studies by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry have revealed that pollution in the Citarum not only affects the river – the damage also extends to the surrounding landscape. This area, known as the Citarum watershed, supports hundreds of thousands of livelihoods.

Restoring the Citarum Watershed

The Citarum watershed covers degraded areas of 77,024 hectares in West Java with various problems like erosion and sedimentation occurring, dry soil, clean water shortages, and more. Over the years, the Indonesian government has been working to restore critically degraded lands in this region, which have been in steady decline.

“The Citarum watershed is a priority area in Indonesia for recovery,” explains Muhammad Silmi, from the West Java Forestry Service. “The collaboration of government with various elements in society is very helpful in accelerating the recovery effort,” he added.

Taking a Root-and-Branch Approach to Pollution

So how can trees help with this recovery? In the short term, the reintroduction of forests along the banks of the Citarum River can help to increase water retention and reduce surface runoff during the heavy rains that hit West Java during the monsoon. This can dramatically reduce the amount of trash flowing into the river.

Looking to the future, a sturdy network of tree roots can also help bind soils together, preventing erosion and returning valuable nutrients to the earth. Healthy trees also store carbon, provide shelter for wildlife, and offer livelihood opportunities to local people.

‘A Green Movement’: The Trees4Trees Planting Program

The cleaning and greening process has already begun. With funding from AstraZeneca, and  support from One Tree Planted, we are engaging more than 38,000 farmers in an area spanning 22,000 hectares of the Citarum watershed. Here, we aim to plant 12 million trees in the next three years, with a minimum of 10 million expected to survive past project completion in 2025.

“Trees4Trees will plant more than 10 million trees in the Citarum Basin by 2025”

Since 2020, we have already planted 1.2 million trees in tributary watersheds such as Ciwidey, Cisangkuy, and Cirasea. By focusing on private land, the program complements similar government schemes already underway in national forests.

“With the (Trees4Trees) program, we can collaborate and involve West Bandung residents to make a green movement for Citarum rehabilitation,” says Sanawinarti, a representative of the West Bandung Regency Environmental Service. “We are really thankful to this program,” she added.

Turning Over a New Leaf: The 2022 Planting Season

On November 24, Trees4Trees kicked off the 2022 planting season in the Citarum river watershed. Since then, more than 1.7 million seedlings have been distributed in the project areas.

In December, we also celebrated the official opening of a new Trees4Trees nursery: the Ciminyak Nursery in Cililin Regency, West Bandung, which became our second nursery in the Bandung area (the other being Arjasari).

“We hope these seedlings will grow well,” said Muhammad Rizki Fauzan, a representative from AstraZeneca Indonesia in a statement during the opening ceremony. “AstraZeneca also hopes that Trees4Trees will continue collaborating with locals and the Forestry Service in the Citarum rehabilitation effort,” he added.

With the support of local farmers, growers, communities, and government officials, Trees4Trees will continue working to rehabilitate the Citarum watershed. Through collaboration and commitment, we will keep striving to reach our target of 10 million trees by 2025. For now, the future’s looking greener already.

7 Ways to Celebrate Sustainable Christmas and New Year

As the end of the year approaches, people around the world are busy planning a celebration and fun things to do with friends and family. Christmas and New Year are times for celebrating together with merry parties. Festive decorations, presents, food, and other ornaments enliven the celebration but often end up being trash and unpleasant for our environment.

But it is not difficult to make some changes and reduce the environmental impact because this celebration should not have to be a burden for the earth. We can always make Christmas even better by being aware of our impacts. Reduce waste, use compostable materials, and recycle whenever possible.

These 7 eco-friendly ways can help us to celebrate the Christmas and New Year seasons while caring for the earth.

A Live Tree

Celebrating Christmas and New Year might not be complete without a pine tree as part of the decorations. Using a live pine tree is the best option to reduce carbon footprint compared to the artificial tree or a cut-down real pine tree. You can use a pine tree planted in a pot or plant it outside the room to help absorb carbon dioxide.

Eco-friendly Decorations

Christmas and New Year decorations and ornaments are beautiful but often made from plastic and undegradable material. Instead of buying new ornaments, reusing last year’s decorations, or creating decorations and ornaments from reusable and eco-friendly materials will be the best choice to reduce undegradable waste.

You can also make your own eco-friendly ornaments. They can be from recycled materials like dried oranges, dried pine fruits, origami ornaments from the newspaper or reused paper, or also hang cookies on the tree.

Minimize the Energy Usage for Lighting

To reduce the energy during Christmas and New Year celebrations, you can choose solar-powered lights and eco-friendly candles made from soya, vegetable oil, or beeswax to complete the decorations. Also, make sure to keep the energy usage at a minimum by switching off the light when it is not in use.

Avoid Non-recyclable Single-use Table Ware

If you host a party or gathering to celebrate Christmas and New Year, avoid using single-use table ware. Minimize the use of glasses, plates, and cutlery made from undegradable materials like plastics, styrofoam, and paper coated with plastics as much as you can. Alternatively, you can ask your guest to bring their own plates, glasses, or water bottles.

Avoid Food Waste

Enjoying delicious and varied food is the best way to celebrate Christmas and New Year. But it is important to make plans and estimate how much food you need for the celebration. Always try to cut any food waste and use up those leftovers.

Less Gift Wrap or Use Recycled Paper to Wrap

Gifting is always fun to do during Christmas and New Year seasons. And it comes with tons of wrapping paper and plastic which always end up as trash. Compared to wrapping gifts with wrapping paper that contains glitter, plastic, or metallic finish that is harmful to the environment, using recycled wrapping paper is a better option. You can also use newspapers to wrap your gifts and decorate them with reusable items. To reduce using gift wrap, you can give a gift of an experience like cooking a special meal or a tutorial. Digital gifts like e-books, music apps, or movie apps subscriptions are also great options. You can also gift alive trees through Trees4Trees
