In recent years, Yaya and fellow farmers in his village have shifted toward more sustainable practices by cultivating trees and crops that can be harvested without cutting them down. He prioritizes clove and cadamba. Cadamba for its excellent shade that supports crop growth, and clove for its valuable flower buds and leaves, which can be processed into clove oil for additional income.
