Why Trees?

Trees sustain life on Earth in countless ways, supporting all living beings.

Trees provide the oxygen we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, shelter for wildlife, and medicine to heal us. They also play a crucial role in stabilizing the global climate, making them essential to a healthy planet.

Every tree planted brings us closer to a better, more livable Earth and here's why their existence is vital!

Improving Air Quality

Trees purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen, and filtering harmful pollutants – making the air cleaner and healthier, especially in urban areas.

Conserving Water

Trees sustain water cycles by intercepting rain, reducing runoff, and stabilizing stream banks. Trees within healthy forests preserve water resources and improve the water quantity, quality, and natural filtration. Forests supply 75% of the world’s freshwater.

Enhancing Soil Quality

Trees improve soil health by retaining moisture, adding nutrients, and preventing erosion. Their roots reduce runoff, landslides, and floods, while healthier soil supports stronger growth and higher yields. Even a 9.5% forest loss can greatly increase erosion risk.

Combat Climate Change

Dense forests absorb CO₂ and store it in trunks, roots, and branches, helping fight climate change. Trees also improve soil health, allowing it to store more carbon for longer periods. Indonesia’s tropical rainforests alone sequester around 2.4 billion tonnes of CO₂ each year.

Support Biodiversity

Trees sustain biodiversity by providing food, shelter, and habitats for countless species. Forests host 80% of terrestrial biodiversity, and Indonesia – home to Wallacea and Sundaland – ranks among the world’s 17 mega-biodiversity countries. By planting trees, we help safeguard these ecosystems.

Promote Health

Trees improve air, water, and soil quality, providing clean water, healthy food, and fresh air. They also support human health by providing natural, plant-based medicines. 25% of modern medicines are derived from forest plants compounds.

Support Local Livelihoods

Trees support livelihoods and local economies by providing sustainable income from products such as fruits, nuts, leaves, bark, and sap. They also enhance local landscapes, boost tourism, and create alternative income sources, with 1.6 billion people worldwide relying on forests for their survival.

Trees and Forest Facts

Fact #1
73,000 tree species exist on our planet, but only 64,000 have been documented
Fact #2
Each year, one person needs 7 to 8 mature trees to provide them oxygen to breathe.
Fact #3
10 million hectares of forest are lost each year, equal to 27 soccer fields per minute
Fact #4
Tropical trees, like those in Indonesia, capture 4 times more carbon than in cooler regions
Fact #5
Mangrove trees sequester up to 10 times more carbon annually than terrestrial forests
